Balance Doesn’t Exist. Intentionality Does.

Balance in life while working in the restaurant/hospitality industry is something that many people strive for, but it can often seem elusive. First off, there is no such thing as balance in life, let alone while you are in the business. However, there are many simple things that you can do that will have a significant impact on your life. Here are ten things that are easy to do but yield a high impact in helping you be successful.

Wake up early: Waking up early will give you a head start on the day and help you be more productive. It also gives you time to focus on your goals and set your intentions for the day.

Journaling: Taking the time to journal is essential in planning and putting what you desire onto paper and into the universe. Find the time either AM upon waking or PM before bed to make this a staple in your compounding habits!

Make your bed: Making your bed may seem like a small thing, but it can help you start your day off on the right foot. It also gives you a sense of accomplishment and sets the tone for a productive day.

Read or listen to an audible regularly: Reading or listening to podcasts is a great way to expand your knowledge and broaden your perspective. It can also help you develop critical thinking skills and improve your communication with all key stakeholders of your business.

Exercise Daily: Exercise has numerous benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood, and boosting energy levels. It can also help you maintain a healthy weight, increase stamina, and reduce the risk of getting sick. Find the time and find a plan that works for you. Being an influential leader means you are influencing yourself!

Practice gratitude: Practicing gratitude can help you appreciate the good things in your life and improve your overall well-being and your relationship with your team. It will also help you develop a positive attitude and outlook on life, business, and relationships. I know it sounds

corny but daily positive affirmations work. I was skeptical and even would allow my negative thoughts to creep in and doubt my own abilities. Once I started listing all the things I am grateful full myself talk became my most important meeting of the day!

Learn a new skill: Often in the business, we make excuses that we do not have the time to do anything else but to be an operator. That said, learning a new skill can help you expand your knowledge and improve your skill set. It can also boost your confidence and give you a sense of accomplishment and widen your services to others.

Set goals: Setting goals will help you focus your energy and achieve success. It can also give you a sense of direction and purpose. You won’t be able to hit a target without having something to aim at.

Stay organized: Staying organized can help you be more productive and reduce stress. It can also help you prioritize your tasks and achieve your goals. I often have many running lists but I never list them as a “to-do” list but rather as my “accomplish” list. Not only is writing your goals a great way to set targets, hold yourself accountable, and give you guidance but crossing off the task feels pretty dam good too!

Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness can help you reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and concentration, and increase self-awareness. It can also help you develop a more positive outlook on life.

Build strong relationships: Building strong relationships with family, friends, and colleagues can help you feel supported and connected. It can also help you develop important social skills and increase your sense of well-being. Checking in with friends and old colleagues from time to time helps fan the flames of friendship. With family, you may not have the time you would like with them but what I have learned is that intentionality is truly the key to the kingdom of time. Make the time count, be involved where you can but most importantly always be present at the moment.

Success in life doesn't have to be complicated and I truly do not have all the answers but by making a mental switch and incorporating these simple practices into your daily routine, you can yield high impact and achieve success in all areas of your life.
